Computer-Specific Experience
- Technical Assistance Specialist, Burlington Telecom, Burlington, VT, February 2006-present.
Provision of technical assistance to Burlington Telecom's phone, cable, and Internet customers, including: troubleshooting problems with customers, assisting in problem resolution, and handing off to other departments when necessary. Position requires extensive understanding of different computer software and hardware (Windows and Macintosh) and the ability to communicate solutions to customers either orally or in writing. Position also requires on-going training and self-education on new technology implemented by Burlington Telecom. In addition to regular duties, I designed and implemented a trouble tracking system using HTML, PHP, and MySql. The system has been in operation since June and has proven valuable in providing improved customer service.
- Pro Se Computing, Burlington, VT, February 1995 - December 2000.
Owned and operated part-time networking and computer support business for other businesses and individuals. Designed computer and network installations, recommended hardware and software, installed equipment, trained users, and provided support. Work covered the full range of Windows operating systems (Win 95 to XP), as well as myriad applications (word processing, spreadsheets, data management, communications software, etc.). A significant portion of this work was Internet-related: e-mail, Web surfing, hardware configuration (including LAN and Router set-up, Ethernet, TCP/IP, DNCP, DNS, and FTP protocols), and the use of networking troubleshooting tools like Ping, IPConfig, DNS Lookup, etc.
- General Computer Skills, July 1973 - present.
I have worked with various types of computers (minicomputers and personal computers) for more than 30 years. In addition, I have studied and written extensively about the telecommunications industry and am familiar with emerging technologies, including fiber systems. Since 1996, I have been working with HTML and web publishing, and have created several websites. My current website, www.FrederickLane.com, is a combination of static HTML and dynamic PHP pages. Over the past year, I have learned basic PHP and MySql programming techniques and have used those skills to create a trouble tracking system for Burlington Telecom, a research database to organize and store more than a decade's worth of research, and a dynamic web publishing system for myself.
